When you create, use, remix or sell work you have to think about who own the rights to that work. It all starts with you, the creator. Merely the fact that you brought work into this work gives you copyright. You own your work.
However there are more types of intellectual property (IP) that you can own like design rights, trademarks and patents. Next to IP you as an artist or producer have to deal with other legal affairs like personality rights, quit claims, contracts, price quotes, licensing and so on.
PS: if you are more about sharing instead of owning, check out open source projects like Creative Commons. Even not owning, legally needs to be specified.
